Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is a medical procedure that uses small amounts of medications,
natural plant extracts and vitamins injected just beneath the skin to break
down fat cells in the layer of fat and connective tissue called the mesoderm.
History of Mesotherapy
The treatment was first developed by a French physician in 1958 and has
since been practiced extensively in Europe and Brazil for “body sculpting” by
eliminating localized fat deposits and cellulite. Within the past
two years it has become popular here in the U.S. Mesotherapy
has proven to be both safe and effective for the treatment of cellulite,
spot fat reduction and skin rejuvenation. It is not a treatment
for obesity, nor does it decrease the risk of obesity related diseases such
as Diabetes or Heart Disease.
Questions & Answers
- How does mesotherapy achieve spot fat reduction?
- A combination
of medications similar to that used for cellulite is
injected into areas of fat accumulation such as “love handles”, “saddle
bags”, “double
chins”, and postpartum belly fat. This results in breakdown
of existing fat cells as well as prevention of the storage
of new fat. Increases
in local circulation augment the “flushing out” of the broken-down
fat.
- How many treatments will I need?
- This
will vary according to the extent of the fat and/or cellulite
being treated as well as the goals of the patient. Anywhere from
4-16 treatments given at 1-2 week intervals may be necessary.
- What are the benefits of Mesotherapy over liposuction?
- Liposuction
does not treat cellulite and will often result in increased
dimpling of existing cellulite. Mesotherapy, however, treats cellulite
directly and results in a smoother firmer appearance of the skin surface. Unlike
liposuction, mesotherapy is non-surgical and does not
require any hospital admittance, general anesthesia or downtime. Finally
the body does not accumulate more fat in other areas, which often happens after
liposuction
